Important Primer:
Between the Light Novel(LN), Anime, and Manga, each of these adaptations have chosen to portray Tanya in slight to sometimes jarringly different ways. As a general rule, I’ll be leaning on the anime for primary traits, as those don’t change too much and it is arguably much more accessible/recognized, and introducing some of the diversity we get from the light novel and manga. It varies from least to most severe when going from LN to manga to anime, with the anime almost exclusively portraying just her manipulative and callous tendencies. You could vary the intensity of this character’s negative traits a considerable amount and still call it canon, honestly. I’ll be going by the LN’s tendency to make her more lighthearted and sometimes even comical during less serious scenes, to keep appropriate diversity. (and avoid ‘serious character burnout’)
Core Motivations
Inferiority/Superiority Issues: By default, Tanya has a very low opinion of most people she meets, she wants to be above them in every sense of the words. Be this position, wealth, any metric (she likes) that one might use to judge others. Though she cares little for skills and talents. Of course, someone who’s trained for years with a violin would be a better violinist, for example.
People who prove their worth are competition, people she needs to be wary of or come out ahead of, especially if they’re both in a similar position, such as students competing for top spots.
The only exception is anyone you might classify as a ‘genius’, be it Einstein, Hawkings, Bill Gates, Curie, etc. People who she views as too superior to even try competing with.
In addition, Tanya has a very poor and spiteful view of many lazy or incapable people in positions of power or wealth, believing they were simply born into it and undeserving of their stature.
Ambition: Seen in both her present and past life, there’s very little Tanya won’t do to advance her own position. In her second life, this is partially motivated by her desire to spite “Being X”, the supposed god of her worlds. This is also heavily motivated by the aforementioned Superiority/Inferiority issues. She works hard and with extreme focus, so she believes she deserves every promotion/raise she gets.
In her current life, her main goals were a safe and comfortable position, somewhere in the rear echelon of the military. In her past life it was clawing their way up the corporate ladder from the bottom.
Pragmatism: Tanya believes primarily in numbers, ‘everything has a price’. Her reasoning for most actions is to maximize her value in the eyes of others and prove herself the most valuable human resource. Problems are approached from a raw, emotionless, logical perspective first and foremost. For example, she’s largely apathetic about the deaths of her enemies when fighting… But she still considers wars to be a vile thing, due to how unproductive it is, so she still wants it to end (regardless of her personal involvement).
On the upside, her pragmatic approach to things also helps her evaluate things quickly, judging things by their chance of success and not their danger. IE, her empathy doesn’t hold her back in stressful situations, such as battles.
Other
Low Empathy: Despite displaying plenty of sociopathic tendencies -- between her ambition, use of others as stepping stones, pragmatism and lower empathy; all traits of a high functioning sociopath -- Tanya does show some empathy throughout the show, saving the lives of her colleagues sometimes at great risk to herself. People who work under her, in general, serve as strong reminders of her still present morals, among other smaller or more subtle examples.
On the topic of lowered empathy, Tanya’s biggest struggle is failing to put herself in others’ shoes, assuming everyone follows the same utilitarian pragmatism she does. Her inability to put herself in others’ shoes, and indeed to anticipate others’ emotional responses to things is exactly what caused her first death and, in her second life, failure to realize that the actions she thinks will demonstrate her reasonability and suitability for out-of-combat work, it was instead viewed as dedication and valor that should be encouraged to the front lines.
Flat but still technically ‘neutral’ morals: Aside from being fairly straight edge (doesn’t smoke, honored her parents, pro-animal rights, never stole, told deliberate lies, or committed adultery), Tanya, while ruthless, claims every action she takes has a purpose, if a vicious act didn’t have a meaning and rationale she wouldn’t do it. Despite her low empathy for fellow soldiers (aside from cases seen in those under her command), she loathes her superiors and peers who endanger people's’ lives needlessly and can’t stand frivolous military spending, for example. All in all: She is very much a believer in “the ends justify the means”, and while the means are often not great, the ends themselves are usually at least neutral.
